I'm still a little jilted at the lack of a proper winter this year. However with spring in the air it's almost time for BEACH SEASON. No doubt you'll probably see this dude at a beach somewhere... Ladies beware he's trolling for your digits...
Hope you dig,

Beers, Bears. and Bar napkins...
A friend sitting nearby me at a pub says, "Hey Pedro, what are you drawing on?"
After a brief pause I mumble, "uh, a bar napkin.."
Then Following another longer pause they then say... "So that's archival quality bar napkin isn't it?"
Yep, I draw on stuff that falls apart and doesn't keep so well.
But, I still hope you dig it anywho...
P
P.S. The first image here was actually referencing some clip I'd seen earlier that day online... Of a bear waving at someone. I'm sure you can run it down in the Video Web and have a look.
Klyde KLOUDskipper...

He has mighty mighty leg muscles... which he uses to leap over clouds in the sky.
Ugh, I'm tired lately. Need more sleep, or perhaps I need to get to sleep earlier in the evenings.
Just a fun little image. Quick and loose.
Hope you dig.
P
Turtle Minion!

He's to be feared with small horns on his head and awful snaggle teeth. For he has a terrible temper and his a vicious prankster.

A QUEST FOR CANVAS...
I usually draw on printer paper, and haven't bought an actual sketch book type BOOK in some time... Above you'll see part of the reason why I don't buy so many sketchbooks.
True it may not be Archival quality but, I kinda like drawing on things that are more disposable (recyclable) so that I don't feel possessed to hold onto whole books of drawing verses weeding out some good sheets from a stack of sketches.. Keeps the artwork ephemeral.. Personally I really need to work on filtering out the Keepers from the discard heep in my work. I do a lot of sketching.... Doesn't mean I should keep it all... Am I right...
Here's a rough sample of some random scribbles on the brown bag with a touch of photoshop..
Hope you dig... Happy sketching,
P
P.S. One thing I didn't mention in my brown paper flyer is the fact that having a mid-tone work surface of brown lets you work light and dark too... So you can get additional value studies into every drawing.... Very cool!..

Just don't know what to do with MYSELF...
So,
Several days ago I ran out of paper whilst sitting in the local diner waiting on my eggs, hash, crispy potatoes, and toast. I was looking about for something to draw on when this little paper scrap caught my eye..
You get three guesses at what the paper is that I drew this little fella on... The first two guesses don't count...
Canvas is EVERYWHERE...
I'm still just using the pen a lot because it lets me keep loose and play around...
Hope you dig.

"SA JA" Studies...

The Korean word for Lion is "SA JA"...
I believe I drew this a few months back for a showpiece Idea that I was working on. In the end I shelved it in favor of another concept but I've held onto these lion sketches. I actually hold onto a lot of my drawings (which has a good and bad side to it) but find that I need to sift and purge out stuff lately.
So, I scanned these and introduced a dash of color.
Quick and exploratory image. Fun stuff.
I think I'd definitely like to try using this design for a future image.
For now though I'll share it, and you can comment on how much my Lion drawing looks like a bear... D'OH!! I always wind up back at drawing Bears for some reason.
Hope you dig,
P
I'm Helpful...

I know someone who had been delivered a Netflix Disk. However after watching it they had managed to lose that little white paper sleeve they ship it with... Unclear on what to do with the film I suggested that they stick the disk inside some printer paper and put that back into the red mailer envelope... I didn't think they'd use the whole sheet of paper... But they did any who. In short, It didn't fit.
So I jumped in to be HELPFUL. I cut the sheet of paper a bit and figured that it need some text type info to help the good folks a netfilx sort it all out. I snagged a sharpy and got down to business... In short I'm super duper helpful...
Hope you dig,
P
P.S. Its been a little over a week since I made this and Netflix hasn't sent my friend any new movies by mail... I still affirm that I am HELPFUL, extremely HELPFUL...
P.P.S... I've useded the word HELP a lot here... I couldn't Help myself...

Chroma-DOK
MOJO-DOK!
Well, with all that being said March MODOK Madness is about to wrap up for 2012. It's been a fun one, so if you wanna head over to MarchMODOKMadness you can check out the works from this year as well as scoping out the total works from the past 5 years... Very cool stuff there, and its worth a look. Also, visit my friend Brendan Tobin's BLOG. He does some of his awesome comics and comic inspired artwork. I also need to thank him for sharing another year of the MODOK MADNESS with me. He's just plain awesome.
Thanks for following the blog there at MMM, and also thanks for following me here at the Bears and Bears. I appreciate it...
Hope yah dig,

Mini Gold Armored Warrior..
Cald in a mighty suit of shining Golden Armor. When he charges into battle he enjoys a plus +20 defense verses fire, electricity, and ice attacks. Also he only takes half damage from missle attacks and gets a +5 damage to all melee attacks.
Truly a mighty suit of armor. Making him a mini mighty Warrior. Plus random Blue hair!
Hope you dig.
P
PHO'-DOK
He loves noodle dishes and is absolutely wild about Sriracha sauce. MODOK often say's that the spicy red sauce is just like getting a MINDBLAST directed straight through to your taste buds.
Hope you dig... Almost out of time for MODOK 2012!!

BOXHEAD...

My friend Elliot makes cartoon shorts based around two characters named Boxhead and Roundhead... He's also in the process of making a feature with these characters... Last year he'd requested that I make some Boxhead and Roundhead art for a competition he was having. I was honored to contribute to the prize pool but admit that every once in a while I get the hankering to draw these charming little characters on my sketch pad... So loose ...
Hope you dig.

He's a Heroic HALFLING.
Yeah,
I've had a pad of college ruled type lined paper nearby over the last few days... Don't normally draw on the stuff. But, will not deny that much of my early artwork is on that particular type of paper... Drawing on it feels really nostalgic for me in a lot of ways. From the memories of drawing in the margins of my notebooks during class (probably could have been a more diligent student) even on to decorating character sheets while on a RPG campaign. Good times.
Drawing and doodling always calms me down, inducing a kind of a meditative state.
I constantly struggle to keep drawing like this of late and it's not always easy. Sometimes I'm just too worried about a work deadline, or personal stuff, or the state of the world going on around me. Gotta pay the bills, ya know.
In these instances I lose focus on that core feeling of exploration/joy that I get from drawing and doodling. Drawing makes me truly happy, its a wonderful escape!
On the blog here I share lots of images that make me happy and I'll make every effort to keep that in mind...
Hope you dig this guy.
He's a level 15 thief.. He has high skill points in concealment too... He's actually hiding eight daggers, a suit of chain mail, a dwarf ax, and 16950 pieces of gold on his person along with all of his other supplies. He may not be much on steal with all that weight but he's a master of hiding things.
I've named him Halberd Heaterhedgerow. People sometimes call him HAL..
Again thanks for stopping by, Hope you dig.

ZooKeeper Zeke...

Usually I'm up late in the evening. Here's a late night sketch on some notepaper... From some weeks back I believe... Lots of fun with sharpie and some marker over top... Super happy I didn't get any wild Smearing of the inks. Other then that I slapped some quicky digital color on it for fun.. Always Gotta remind myself to have fun...

The Cat goes NYAN!...
Funny enough this image began as a kitten head with weird pointy ears.. probably too long for proper kitteh ears, but it was a loose sketch. So I let it slide.. Then I figured I'd draw a toaster and some pop-tarts. The amalgam of all that is what you see before you...
Pretty silly I know but, fun to render out. I mean check out that fly semi pixel based rainbow... Enjoy the weekend everyone...
Hope you dig,

Fun and Educational...
Recently I was tapped to do a quick image for a friend. Normally I get overly wrapped up in these sort of images. They become all consuming. However, I managed to buckle down and just knock this out in a more concise time frame while still working on my overall workflow. True, I might have stopped after my first round of revision. But, I decided to push the pose a bit more, and am happy with what that additional time yielded me. Fun little image.
Plus, I had the chance to freehand a little KOREAN Text (HAN-GUL) into the image. Which made me rather nostalgic for my time spent living there years ago. I can still read the alphabet's characters and write them too. My vocabulary and Grammar is however deplorable. I talk like a Korean 5 year old who knows way too much profanity. But none the less it was fun. I sure Hope that Ethan likes the image. Otherwise, he might kick my ass with some TANG SU DO martial arts.
There's the whole Sha-bang. I just got an all clear to share the image as a whole...
P.s. I might revisit my Korean flashcard Idea.... I've not done any of that in ages...

Also, a recent bout of MODOK sketches yielded this rather strange and off model Dr. Octopus drawing... I think his specs became a weird amalgam of The Mole Man, and Cyclops... Regardless it was good fun in color...

IS THIS THING ON? 2!!
Gallery 1988 in Melrose will host to its second show themed around funny people that make us laugh... Last year I offered up a Ben Stiller themed image, and they liked it enough to invite me back this year. So, I hemmed and hawed on a subject for the image when I finally decided on JOHN PINETTE. I particularly like his stand up special, I SAY NAY NAY . So if your not familiar with him, CHECK HIM OUT! He does a fantastic Ewok impression, as well as a having a great singing voice..
The image may be my last transparency/ paper craft collage image for a while... I actually attempted working with a color transparency this time and found it to be a whole new area for exploration in doing images. Fun stuff.
So, If your in the L.A. area tonight GO CHECK OUT THIS SHOW!... Seriously, it's a good one.. Hell, WEIRD AL YANKOVIC is gonna be there, which kinda puts a tear in my eye while I sit here at my desk in NY... Damn I need a transporter device of some sort.
Hope you dig,

DIO-DOK ROCK!
Stop on by and check out the Miasma of Magnificent MODOK Imagery.

Frankly, a good many of my Modok drawings are drawings that start being about one thing but gradually change focus to something else. Not sure how I got to this

ED "BIG DADDY" ROTH!
On this day in 1932, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth was born in Beverly Hills, California. I'd watched a film about his life and Custom auto work a few months back and figured that making him a caricature study was a good idea... He has a fantastic face for drawing studies, very expressive.
The film Tales of the RAT FINK was great too. A 2006 release narrated by John Goodman with some fun editing and motion graphics work in it. I think you can watch still watch it online too...
So much inspiration in his work.

Get Tough....

Hey there Friends of the blog,
This is URSALA! Queen of the Cave Bears! I cranked out this image for the Angel City Derby Girls out in LA. They're hosting their fifth EAT YOUR ART OUT art auction show this Saturday Feb. 25th and I'm on the dance card.
The theme for this show was Carnival After Dark, and I began by waffling back and forth on what to make (tattooed ladies, fat ladies, Bearded ladies, and contortionists mainly) before deciding that girls kicking ass on roller skates might appreciate the concept of the classic strong woman. Did some research and found some cool old reference photos and stuff. Had lots of fun plotting out the early sketches and noodling with how muscular I was gonna make this lass. This then led to some struggles while I tried to finalize the image where I learned that, indecision does indeed suck. In the end I wound up with this bulky brawny beauty. Which then led me to making a narrative for her as a Strong woman who fights with Grizzly Bears in a spectacular side show event.
I'll see about going back to some of my old sketches here in the future and doing a few more of these, maybe a little strong woman series. I'm trying to branch out more. Truth be told I do draw more then just beers, bears, caricatures, and other stuff. I actually filter out some of my work here and there when I post, but I'm trying to share more varied art with you here, in the future.
Hope you dig,
P
P.S. this is an early comp ans sketch that I'm attaching just for kicks..

Also, I even dabbled in a bit of font building during this project... built the letters I needed in Flash with vector shapework... Probably some of my favorite stuff to do with that program.

THE MASTER VIEWER....

Before I worked in Advertising, I held down a design job within an animation studio here in the city. It was largely Flash design and in spite of my lack of familiarity of the program up front. The job and deadlines taught me to really like Designing and making vector art within flash. It is just more fun for me then screwing around in Illustrator. At least within Flash I get the ability to use vectors, while kinda molding them like I was sculpting. Furthermore the selection tools are much easier for me to muck about with instead of Illustrator. Also I kinda like bringing whatever Vector art I've built into Photoshop for some texture application and finish a bit.
If you look at the ViewMaster disks here you can see that I started this file back in 2009 and sorta forgot about it till now... I like what turned out, and also miss some of those things that fascinated me when I was a kid... The ViewMaster was always extra special to me (kinda wish I still had one), I liked the artwork that was involved with them and the act of holding it up to your eyes and clicking away at that little orange lever to advance the slides... There was even a comforting twang of the spring as the mechanism advanced the images forward...
If your not familiar with some of what Viewmaster images look like this fella HERE, has some spectacular images of slides old and new... Definitely cool..
Seriously love this kind of stuff...
Hope you dig...

Dead Air....

Yeah I'm gonna fess up to the fact that after last years output of work here I've taken a small hiatus here of late... I'm sorry for that, and I am certainly working on some stuff here. It even comes to my attention that I haven't posted my bullet points for Goals I had for this year... So, I'll try and get to that here within the next few days... For now here's a screen grab of something I'm fiddling with...

Duck!!

I'm doing some vector graphics for a font I'm making for a project...
Plugging away at the graphics and I found one of them made me think of a waterfowl...
Thus this little image spawned out with some photo shop...
Love drawing some ducks, getting me ramped up for weddings this year
Hope you dig.

Bonus: Telescoping Duck necks for anyone that thinks Ducks should be more Giraffe-like.

What's next?

It's a question I ask myself from time to time and in most instances I don't get a super clear answer... But, I press onward regardless in spite of lingering confusion. At the moment there are many projects on my plate that I'm working on. So, I'll update about those as they're relevant. Beyond that MODOK is coming with the month of March again this year.. so, I'm getting stoked for that...
So for now here's an image with no real narrative, just confusing stuff. Kinda like me.
Hope you dig,

Searle..

I think I started this paint as sort of a tribute the day after Ronald Searle passed away last month. I shelved it for a few weeks while doing other assorted personal/ work stuff, and just today decided to give it a little more time and attention...
I'm kinda happy with what I turned out, the color was quickly applied and I probably could've put more though into it. However it made for fun exercise and observation...
I know I've got a few caricature type folks floating around here in the feed and wonder if you have any feedback. It's not the most extreme exaggeration, But that's something I'll have to keep working on in my images...
Hope you dig,
P
