GM is the abbreviation for a car company.
However, In the world of Dungeon's and Dragon's it's an abbreviation for Game Master (get it GM)... Yeah I was one of those kids, who dabbled in the odd RPG (roll playing game) with friends... I'd watched a great little documentary over on HULU, about people that were game masters, and what they're lives were like since they loved D&D so much... IT was pretty interesting, a little depressing too, and made me pretty nostalgic for gaming with friends... SO Here's a grumply little goblin type dude with a torch shouting at some of his gamers.... THACO!!!! Critical HIT!!!! ROLL A D6!!!!

I wound up doing a kind of Mandala themed bit of animation with a quickie caricature of myself. I'm actually not a person of great inner peace. But, who knows... Maybe if I keep looking I'll find it...

Swimming with other Adults...

So I did this image for an Adult Swim themed show that opens at Gallery 1988 in Melrose California tonight.. I'm still a big fan of Cartoon Planet and SGC2C, and I miss seeing episodes of the show... In particular I really miss hearing the voice acting... Also, I was a big fan of the way that the show was written and made by reusing old footage in interesting ways. If I get some time I'd sure like to do some other spaceghost related images this year...

FORWARD...ever FORWARD

I'm still kind of formulating my plans for this year, because I'm also kind of factoring in for some family events and traveling I'm planning that might cut into some of my artistic productivity. On a side note though I'm trying to learn, more about caricature and basically practice my skill sets for exaggeration and observation. I've started a few new paints in the past few days as well as opening some old photoshop files from 2011 that I'd left unfinished. For me it seems that arriving at the finished image is always the biggest part of the battle. I Noodle around quite a bit with my work. This is a snippet of an image I'll try to wrap up here soon, and I'll attache some before and after images in the hopes you can see some sort of improvement in what I'm doing.

Other then that take a peek and lemme know what you think right now, Maybe you know who it is??

Random Reptoid...

Here's a wacky little reptile I drew during my vacation back to Michiganland over the holidays... I sat down for coffee with my sketching buddy DREW PIERCE from college and skribbled out images like I used to in the old days... Felt good. I'm slow in getting into my workflow for the new year and haven't posted my goals yet but, I've submitted some art to an ADULT SWIM themed show at Gallery 1988 in Melrose LA this coming Friday, and I'll share more about that in a day or so. Along with some of my personal goals for 2012.

For now I have a Reptile Scribble for your eyes.

Did over a dozen show pieces both nation wide and abroad (Paris, and Mexico City).
Busy year indeed.
But, right now I don't even want to think about it. I should be laying out some new plans for the New Year in the next few days.

ONE.....

ER......... I mean 400.

One Year ago, I set a goal for myself. I decided to match the number of posts I'd made in the first four years of my blog over the span of twelve months... 400 Posts later, I can say "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!".

I had a tough time picking an image to post as image 400. I opted for this one since I kinda hoped for a sense of enlightenment. to accompany my feeling of accomplishment at meeting this goal. I also want to take a quick moment and thank all my friends and followers who've supported my efforts and checked in on the blog... You all drive me to be better at what I do. You are all Awesome.

In closing I feel pretty good about my endeavor, and the work it turned out. I'll take it easy for a few weeks now as the holidays approach so that I can relax my drawing arm a tad. I imagine I'll post once or twice more before the year is out but I wanna keep it simple. Because, Next year there will be MORE ART for me to make, and I look forward to sharing it with you here.

TIN MAN

This Image started out as a little study in Illustrator. Wanted to make a version of the Tin Man, from Oz. It seemed like a ggod chance to render some technical looking stuff in illustrator.

Thi early version actually wasn't really working out to my satisfaction. I couldn't seem to find a way to get the poses to work out in a way I was happy with. Later that evening I actually sketched out this little image idea that got me thinking.

Thus bringing me to this final version, there are a few things I'd probably edit if I were to draw it again. But, for now I'm happy with it. Let me know what you all think if you have a moment.

The Menacing Tree DEVIL

When Settlers first came to the new world they didn't know what to make of this large furry rodent that lived in the trees... It would ravage crops and livestock as well as Destroy patio furniture... Early settlers attempted to stamp out the population, with no success. Its believed the tree devil still exists in remote regions of Manitoba.

I think I had squirrels on the brain when I sketched this image. Sorta halted myself from getting to much more sucked into the color and rendering...

This one eyed feline jumped off my pencil around the Halloween season. Liked the idea of a MONO Optical cat from the spectral world. It uses its glowing orange eye to hunt for mice in the night. If he focuses he can also use his super eye to look through men's soul's.. I've named him Fromley.

Subject Matters..

So,
I've neglected drawing this stuff for just a while... My apologies...
I fiddled out some little bear drawings and decided to flex some of my rusty Korean writing skills with the aid of a bilingual dictionary.
Funny enough, the Korean words for sword is very similar to the word for Bear. Writing them out shows how closely they resemble eachother.

Beyond that I just have a page of little bear drawings in different situations. Then tacked on some Korean words. Some of them are actually written and pronounced just like they are in English (Hive is "Ha-ee-bu"), but a few of the words are unique (Butterfly is "Na-Bee)...

Here's a placemat from a few nights back while out eating with my friend Liam. I was pretty focused on inhaling a BLT with some chips but, I did squeeze out a few scribbles that I liked... SO this is pretty bodged together for a post... Minimal colors, drawn with one of those micron pens so the lines are minimal and clean I hope... I really do love the place mates with the Grecian themed design pattern around the outside... Always makes for a great frame..

I'm still fussing around with Illustrator... I tend to bring things in to photoshop at some point just to apply colors and textures and such... even do some color mods... The good news is that illustrator is slowly growing on me. I like doing design/ shape based drawing and college... and this program lends itself very well to that..

I'll post up some more when I get it wrapped up... For now though, enjoy the fox.

I post a lot of digital work here on the blog in spite of the fact that I draw quite a bit, now and then. I've had friends ask why I don't post my images in a more unedited fashion. My sketch pages can in fact get a little messy. This page here is a good example of such. There is a bit of color on it. But, it was drawn on the back of a bit of photostat that I was using for a showpiece... I also drew an image on the page earlier that day (which I didn't like too much) and, later drew over because i'd run out of blank sheets... In honest, I kinda like the MISH MOSH of the image, and imagine I'll try to do more stuff like this in the future...

Adding in some of the white graphic shapes lent sort of a deco feeling to the image while kinda sticking to my personal like for using the white space around the image to make negative forms for part of the image framing. In the end, I just like drawing the pretty ladies every once in a blue moon...

Fantastic Controtions of Movement...

Some weeks back during a few minutes of downtime I had a sheet of paper out and I was sketching some dogs. I was looking at distinctive breeds when I stumbled across a page full of Greyhound pictures.. Therein, I found an image of one running (i'd assume racing) at top speed, and the lines and movement of its body simply begged me to fiddle out a quick drawing... I really like how it came out, in spite of its rough simplicity.perhaps I'll be able to visit it again in the future...

everyday I march towards my future without hair. It certainly isn't by choice but, it is inevitable and I'll work with it as best I can... I spotted a guy on the train a few days back and he had a very receded hairline, with a super clean delineation between Hair and scalp... Looked like he ha a decent head of hair on the whole. it sparked me to draw this fella up.

POST NO BILLS....

SO I did this Bill Murray artwork for a gallery show out in California... It opened on the third and I really grappled with the likeness of this truly excellent Actor. However, it seems every time I do a new showpiece I get slightly better with my planning and though processes regarding making artwork... Better Troubleshooting, thumbnails and the like help me work through to a finished image faster...
I even stumbled onto a pretty cool alternate Idea while discussing things with a friend, which I might look into at a later date. Sadly, I had a deadline for this. Which meant I needed to knock it out...
I opted to portray Bill in Osmosis Jones, which is a movie that not everyone loved. But for me it has a soft spot. I actually met Bill Murray at the opening screening for this film at the Egyptian theater out in Hollywood. I actually sat behind Murray during the film screening. It was a treat, as far I was concerned and I got to chat with him for just a few minutes before he left...Really nice guy. From there I spent the rest of the evening drinking HUGE (plastic solo sized) cups of free booze on an empty stomach. Whilst shooting the breeze with Molly Shannon and some other friends..
All and all, the night was awesome... The hangover the following morning was not so great...

BOAT FANATIC... Inspired by Bob Staake

This is Horatio, he likes boats... Schooners, clippers, steamers, and U's... it doesn't matter.. He just gets wild eyed crazy when he's out on the beach with his Boats..
I'm still working on my illustrator chops and applying bits of photoshop where I don't completely understand all of the illustrator functions for shading, gradation, and texture applications. Furthermore I've had a little Bob Staake on the brain with my drawings and recent re-introduction to Illustrator... I love shape based drawing so much..

RUSHIN'RABBIT!!

He jumped offa' my pencil tonight on the 7 train. Started out just being a rabbit, but once the cape popped into my head I figured he'd be a superhero with incredible speed and a redundant cape.. Imagine he'd have a thick Russian accent just because I like how it'd play offa his fuzzy little bod. Further more I remembered that I can hold my pencil sideways... SO, I will try to do that more for shading effects from here on out.. I'm not gonna clean this up too much.. it's the drawing just as it hit the page. Plus I threw in some fun text work to boot...
I do also like drawing letters sometimes, even if it takes me back to my college typography classes (spooky) by proxy...

Here's a Vampyre head I scribbled and stuck onto some bat wings... I Imagine that he's transforming so that he can get a Snickers bar or possibly a Kit Kat. Maybe some Reese's cups or candy corn... Love the candy corn...

I received a call from my father and my brother this week regarding Halloween pumpkin designs... Sadly, I've not carved one in some years (just not practical here in my NY abode), but I'm always thinking about it around this time o' year... I sent them about a dozen rough designs... Yep... This blue dog is named "Phtahlo". Like most Blue Cartoon type dogs he enjoys solving a good mystery.. In this image here he's found a bone, next he'll be hunting for a place to bury it. Finally he'll probably hunt down his person, so that he can get some food..

Have a lot to learn yet about texture applications and stuff in illustrator yet... I'll keep on working at it though, and try not to get too discouraged when it's being difficult.

Meet Triceradon, a dinosaur who was truly before his time... Believe it or not he was naturally radioactive... which gave him a bioluminescent quality, which wound up being very useful in dark swamps were this dino would often hide in order to avoid big predators. Furthermore his glow attracted giant Prehistoric swamp insects which were in fact a mainstay of the Triceradon's diet...

I've always called them "Blowfish". I suppose mainly because the face of these fish made me think they were blowing out birthday candles on a cake or something like that... I guess the proper name for the fish species know as Tetraodontidae truly is difficult to nail down...
I was assigned a the job of drawing one a few days back and came to find a bunch of different names for the guy... Everything from Balloon fish, to Porcupinefish to Puffer fish, tons of nicknames... So, since this drawing wasn't used at all I figured I'd color it and share it with you all here at the blog... So that you might all hang out with this globefish, who's name just so happens to be Constance...

Staggosaur

The research of dinosaurs was shocked recently to find that there was an even later period of dinosaurs that possibly had contact with humans...
They found a skeleton deep within the desert and have called it...The Staggosaur(see skilled artists recreation above).
Shockingly the recently exhumed skeleton has a skull that was almost nine inches thick in all directions. with a brain cavity big only enough to house a few pellets of bird shot. It is believed that he might have wandered into the desert in search of water.

When I was sketching this I had one of the sandmen from LOGAN'S RUN in my mind. Apparently you can buy, an actual blaster that functions like the one in the movie. I'd have one if it wasn't so expensive, but its also really hard to think of things that I can use it for.

Toccata & Ewe in D Minor..

I've not messed about much with Adobe Illustrator in a long time... I remember back when I was Teaching Cont. Ed back in Detroit that I'd used some of my comp pay to take a reduced price seat in a 12 session course on the program... I remember getting a handle on some of the aspects and then we got into advanced functions of the Gradient Mesh tool. Then my head just collapsed...
None the less I'm starting to dig back into the program... I'm so comfortable with Photoshop, that its both trying, and rewarding at the same time to branch out... Regardless I've been getting more Illustrator assignments and I need to sharpen my skill set in Vector Graphics...
This sheep is the result of some early tinkering, though I'll admit I did a little stuff in photoshop prior to posting. Mainly, I added come color adjustment and textureing... I'll try to do some more of these in the future so that I can get some more practice in... If you can think of animals for me to tackle please drop me a post in the comments and I'll look into it.
